design by nature

Last week I ventured over to the Sunset Junction, Farmer’s Market on Saturday morning for the first time. The actual produce farmers’ stalls number about 10-12 total and there’s an equal amount of food stalls and crafters. Not super impressive for the home chef, but easy to get to and get through without the hassle of the Hollywood Farmer’s.
I did come across these beautiful flowers that are part of the lily family. It was $7 bucks for a bunch of five. They are called “Stars of Bethlehem”. I had never seen these before and found them to be so unique and sculptural. I am always fascinated by order and patterns that are found naturally occurring in nature, like pinecones and artichokes, and especially the romanesco cauliflower that looks like a giant green fractal.
All the tiny flowers will eventually open up. These flowers and other flowers or plants that come on a stalk are an easy way to add architectural greenery to your kitchen or home without having to be a pro at flower arrangements. Another way would be to create ikebana flower arrangements, something that my bro-in-law is good at. I’ll have to hit him up for tips next time I’m in Boston.
