The somewhat annual Modernica 2008 Sales Event is upon us again. Mark your calendars. I caught wind of this from a friend of a friend of a friend. It’s been a couple years since I have gone, but it is well worth it. Usually, they have a pre-sale the Thursday night before the actual weekend sale, but I’m not sure if that is happening this year. Still waiting for my postcard before hoards of people read about this in the LA Weekly.
In the past, I scored a Nelson small bubble lamp as well as a shell chair, both for really cheap. Like 75% off cheap. And a Gainey vintage large cylindrical planter. You can still find these planters new though and have holes drilled in the bottom for not much more than I paid at the sale. Beware though, last year I heard the line to pay for items at the pre-sale took about 2 hours! I can’t imagine what the line was like at the weekend sale! These items better be heavily discounted. I think everyone’s best bet is to go with a friend, as one waits in line, the other gathers. Though that friend better be a friend and not a fiend.
A couple years ago when I went, I saw many familiar faces from the design community waiting in the line patiently even before the doors opened. Probably the earliest I’ve seen some of them. Then it was a blur and people were running in and basically sitting on whatever case study sofa or shell chair they could get to first. Scary, yes, but worth it.
I call dibs on the 4 matching shell chairs and round table. Every man for himself.

Here’s some highlights for what will also be happening downtown for the big sale: There will be food for purchase from the Green Truck. Lots of our friends from such organizations as Quiksilver’s siteLA project, Downtown Dog Rescue, and Neutra VDL will be on site as well.

This just in from Frank Novak of Modernica:
“Last year we had a long wait because we only had one credit card machine. The next sale day we had two and a much shorter wait. This year we have five machines and more staff, and a lot more stuff.”
