hot deal at the parker
June 9, 2008

One might think there are no limits to my wanting to “save” money. Here’s a deal that I must share with everyone. The revamped Merv Griffin Hotel and Givenchy spa, is now known as the Parker (Meridien) Palm Springs, almost completely re-hauled by Jonathan Adler. Adler is a product / interior designer who’s inspiration is heavily drawn from past decades. Incidentally, his life partner is Simon Doonan, the Creative Director of Barney’s New York. Talk about gay, power couple. You might notice some overlap in their quippy, clever “hand-written” notes used throughout the hotel. Taste. Luxury. Humor. Do you see the commonalities yet?

I stayed at this place last year on the Labor Day weekend because the rate of $99 a night , including breakfast, was too good to pass up. Aside from the 120˚ F heat, I was feeling rather indulgent. Room service, breakfast in bed, pool side cocktails and deeply discounted outlet shopping since most people won’t brave these conditions. We are talking 90% off already discounted Bottega Veneta housewares, like the lovely red linen interciatto placemats that you spy in some of my food photos. Some weekend monogram duffel bags from Etro, etc. etc. etc. It was all more than pleasant.
Staying at the Parker is not exactly like the horrible reality show, Welcome to the Parker, on Bravo. I love the rooms and the communal areas like the lounge with leather poofs feels like you are at your quirky aunt’s house that collects all kinds of flea market finds. If you enjoy lolly gagging amidst Curtis Jere wall sculptures and sipping Pelligrino out of Iittalia Ultima Thule goblets (designer year 1968), this is the getaway for you. I was worried that it would feel like I was camping out in one of Adler’s flagship stores, but it has a nice mix of vintage or antique items combined with his colorful wovens and ceramics. It truly is like no other hotel. And I can say that with confidence, after just spending this past weekend in Vegas.

So those summer desert scorcher rates are upon us again. I guess it’s better to keep the hotel running than have it empty. For a Sunday- Thursday night stay, the price for the Glutton’s Delight, yes you read correctly, is $199 a night, and you receive $200 in food credit. hot damn. Taxes and resort fee (about $30 per night, which includes valet parking) is what you will have to take care of. It’s quite a deal. With three swimming pools to choose from, that might be the hardest decision you have to make. I just thought it would be completely negligent if I didn’t mention this first time ever appropriately named special offer; Glutton’s Delight, considering the overwhelming trend of being a foodie these days. I hear the restaurant, Mister Parker’s is good. Though I haven’t tried it myself, I was perfectly content with room service and re-runs. This offer may be a good reason to give it a try.
The Spa Junkie is also available on those same terms, but instead of food credit you receive $200 in spa credit. I don’t think you can get double the amount of “credit” if you stay more than one night, thus being the hook and reel that gets you to stay at the hotel and spend some change on say, a few cocktails near the pool and dinner and wine for two. Oops, there goes your credit and then some… OK for those of you living in reality, the weekend rate is $299 giving you the same credit so costing $99 a night + fees. This hotel, during high season, is about $350 a night. just fyi.
Sign me up for both specials.
p.s. (no pun intended) BUT make note of the lack of people in my photos. Now that is what I call a vacation. Cheap rates, no crowds, and outlet shopping. Good french fries never hurt either.
