If you are a sucker for design-y hotels like I am, Hotel Healdsburg will satisfy your needs. Whenever I’m at a loss of places to stay, I look on Tablet Hotels and see what’s in the area of where I am headed.  We were torn between staying at Farmhouse InnIndian Springs Resort (Calistoga), and this place. The tricky part here was we needed a room that could accommodate 4 people and we went with the convenience of being in a small town and not as isolated, like our other options.

One thing to make note of, some hotels will charge you the rate of whatever day you have checked in on, and usually that being the higher rate. Since we were staying Saturday and Sunday night (which is always a cheaper rate) I did not want to pay the high rate for both nights.  The high rate usually pertains to weekend stays of Friday and Saturday night.  I was able to book that split level price through Tablet Hotels. In the past, I have also tried to stay at a high end hotel for one night and was consistently told that it was a two night minimum on several sites as well as by the hotel itself.  I was able to book only one night on Tablet. When there is a will there is a way.

The location is excellent. We were in the midst of all the in-town tasting rooms, directly across from the town square park, and several restaurants and shops. Being the northern most town in Sonoma County, we were already nestled between the 3 wine making valleys, Russian River, Dry Creek and Alexander Valleys. How convenient.  There was also a Safeway just a couple blocks behind the hotel for any forgotten sundries or supplies.

The town of Healsdburg is so charming and situated so close to all the wineries it makes more sense to stay here than in the downtown area of Sonoma. We were also told that Sonoma has a different vibe than Napa. On our last day, we drove to Yountville and saw the town of St. Helena and the narrow highway lined on both sides with winery after winery and I think we made a wise choice in going to Sonoma over Napa. It really is two separate trips, since they are about 1.5 hours away from each other. Sonoma seemed much more relaxed and spread out and not as crowded. I can’t wait to bring my bike back and ride through the country roads.

A couple very notable things about Hotel Healdsburg are their huge separate bathtubs, the spacious rooms, and the amazing breakfast spread (included with the cost of the room). There were fruit, scones, muffins, cereal, fresh squeezed juices, coffee, a breakfast quiche thingie, sausage, smoked salmon, bagels, , tomatoes and capers, hard boiled eggs etc.  You get the idea. Did I mention the Frette sheets and bathrobes and slippers? The pool area was beautiful and comfortable. The lounge chairs were comfortable and well shaded, although they could have used a few more, but there were hammocks and other areas to hide from the sun.

Though they don’t have 24 hour room service, only have it during operating hours of Dry Creek Kitchen, there’s the Café Newsstand where you can order sandwiches and such for out by the pool.  Drinks of course are available. A huge trunk of complimentary ice cold, bottled water is right next to the trunk of towels. No one wants you to be dehydrated at this hotel!

Prior to our arrival we received a call about making any necessary spa and restaurant reservations. The bed time chocolate they leave on the bedside table is quite good, though I never understood eating chocolate before bed. They really do think of everything. I truly appreciate their attention to detail.

While maintaining the simple, stark lines, there is nothing cold or unapproachable about this hotel. The oversized and overstuffed couches in the fireside lounge are proof of this and are further supported by the featherbeds in the rooms. They have incorporated the surrounding settings so beautifully into the overall decor that it’s impossible not to glimpse the mountainside or some lush, green vines from any point in the hotel.

It is pure, modern luxury, in all it’s wine country glory.
