In the past, my trips to the bay area usually get overshadowed by visiting all kinds of family.  I seem to miss out on all the culinary delights.  It’s like going to paris and not getting to shop at all or see the eiffel tower.  This time i made a point in getting all the places i wanted to go to in, including some very well known places like Chez Panisse and Slanted Door.

I reluctantly admit that i am a completely neurotic planner.  I plan and write things down in calendars and potentially set myself up for let downs in not meeting these mini-goals. For my own personal reasons, i like to plan trips and itineraries.  i’ve traveled both ways with packed itineraries and loosey-goosey no itinerary.   I think something in the middle has always been the best:  reserving time aside for some carefree wandering and making sure to schedule in and research places and things you want to do ahead of time so you don’t arrive somewhere and find that the museum you wanted to check out is closed on tuesdays and not mondays and the place you want to eat at is booked three weeks out.  I usually try not to make these schedules too ambitious, like only plan a couple things a day.  lately, and especially for this trip, I planned our schedule around meals and food.  i had warned my friend, jen, that she could only come if she was willing to come along for the ride.

I’m posting this itinerary because my brother thinks i am a nut case and he thinks it’s hilarious that i do things like this.  What’s funny is he does the exact same thing, down to sharable google document spreadsheets for hotel availability and what periodical and website he heard about it from. i guess it’s genetic.

In my defense, i just want to ensure that i am not missing anything. The over achiever in me definitely shines through on vacations. I recently watched the film Darjeeling Limited.  i guess i might come across a bit like Owen Wilson’s character where he has a laminated pocket itinerary printed for everyone and an assistant coordinating things in a different train compartment.  I promise i have never laminated an itinerary or brought peacock feathers on a trip.

Of course, we didn’t make it to a couple things, as some trickled all onto the last day, but there’s nothing wrong with missing things and carrying them over for a return visit. I think of my itineraries merely as guidelines that can be strayed from at anytime, especially if it’s to nurse a hangover or throw a small dinner gathering.
