bi-rite dreamery
March 25, 2008

Famished from not having eaten anything but Mcdonald’s french fries at LAX 7 hours prior (yes, i have no shame- airports and roadtrips are great excuses for fast food,) we didn’t want to spoil our appetites for our much anticipated meal at chez panisse in a couple hours.
What a perfect time to have some ice cream. I have been hearing about bi-rite creamery’s amazing sea salt caramel flavored ice cream. This may be the best ice cream shop i have ever eaten at. No exaggeration. i’ve had ice cream around the world, italian gelatos in rome, italian ice in france, gelato in paris, ice cream at scoops in LA, gelato from pazzo gelato, etc etc. None compare to bi-rite creamery.
Was it the fact that i hadn’t eaten for the most part of the day? Were my taste buds reacting to a fast being broken? I can proudly contest to those questions, since we returned to bi-rite another time this same weekend after a small dinner party at my brother’s pad and it was equally as yummy. And it was a cool 55˚ out, not exactly ideal ice cream weather.
The consistency of their ice cream is so incredibly creamy. The flavor combinations are deliciously gourmet and somewhat highbrow. These are not just flavors for shock value, but true flavor melding at its finest. This philosophy, once again, reminding me that i was in the gastronomique bay area. I knew for sure i had to have the sea salt caramel, but with what? i decided to pair it with the orange cardamon after contemplating a sundae with olive oil and sea salt. I had to have a mini-talkdown- ‘do not waiver from the flavor you came in for!’ i’m patting myself on the back now for staying focused. These two flavors were like nothing i have ever tasted together. They have several flavor mainstays and also introduce new ones based on seasonal ingredients. I loved that the names of flavors were just scrawled across the glass.
They not only use organic cream and ingredients from local farms, but their containers and spoons are compostable as well. Quite impressive. Now if only i could burn the calories off by walking across the street to delfina or their namesake grocery store, that would be even more efficient.
