microrage: bluebottle coffee
March 31, 2008

Everyone knows what a microwave is but what’s a microroaster? Bluebottle Coffee Co. is an artisanal microroaster founded by a freelance musician from Oakland, CA.and it is quite the “mircrorage”. Finally a backlash to the mass produced, bulk roasted and somewhat burnt coffee beans that have furthered our addiction to the centuries old stimulant. The name itself comes from the first coffee shop in vienna in the 17th century.

As you can see from these photos, Bluebottle is definitely a hit. This is the kiosk on a sunday morning, of an earlier than usual in the year, spring daylight savings. Only in SF will you find a coffee kiosk run out of a garage on a narrow side street in Hayes Valley. I was told this place was known for their leaf decorations in their coffee. I didn’t get one in my latte, but nonetheless it was delicious and best of all strong. I could even taste the difference of the superior quality of the coffee in a paper cup as opposed to a real coffee mug. I didn’t really know much about the place, but when i saw the long line, i knew i was going to like it. I’m a sucker for this grassroots, hippie mentality and from what i recently read on the Bluebottle site, the brainchild behind it is a total extremist, die hard coffee purist. Let’s hope it stays that way. Here is his vow to the public:
“I will only sell coffee less than 48 hours out of the roaster to my customers, so they may enjoy coffee at its peak flavor. I will only use the finest organic and pesticide-free, shade grown beans. If they can’t come to me, i will drive to their house to give them the freshest coffee they have ever tasted.”

It’s a good thing they have an online store where you can buy 1lb bags of beans because he would be doing a lot of driving after making a promise like that and getting me hooked on the stuff. Of course the bags are pricier than other places that make sugary triple grande coffee-esque confections, but would make a great splurge or gift to the coffee fanatic. After all, no one ever said it was cheap to be green, sustainable, and organic. And as far as i’m concerned, rich hippie and boho never go out of style.
hmmm. i wonder if they franchise…this product blows away any asian fruity yogurt stand chain i’ve ever been to.
